Radia

Radia is an international, informal network of radio stations who produce, share and broadcast radio art works. Since its inception in 2005 it has promoted a weekly radio art programme, each station taking turns in asking an artist of its choice to produce a radio art piece to be broadcast on all network stations. Besides this ongoing effort, Radia stations also participate and produce radio art programmes in the context of festivals and other contexts. More can be found about Radia at http://r...

In 2008/2009 – I was in my late twenties but felt like in late puberty – I worked on a collection of fixed sound pieces that I would describe as precisely composed „field poems“. These LAMENTS (as a half-ironic reference to Monteverdis famous Lamento d’Arianna) are based on somewhat classical field recording material (daily life, urban soundscapes, noise) and on the other hand extremely private, spoken and often sobbed confessions I would nowadays assume to be evidence of a mental...

Papradiste More than a year ago he moved from his native town of Bitola to the mountain village of Papradiste. He made his home there as a host of the mountain hut, a former school building in a now almost abandoned village. This audio collage is a heartfelt homage to the beautiful village of Papradiste: the winter loneliness, the birds in early springtime, unexpected encounters and spontaneous music collaborations… in the heart of the mountain different worlds coexist in harmony. *** Stop/Play. Change de fréquences... ! Pile ou face ? Et si on jouait à ça pour changer nos perceptions du monde ? Where does it come from? The impulse, plucking my neural plexus, leaving behind open doors for the algorithm of consciousness to inscribe the new path. Sounding Sambatas   Many other walled towns have been razed to the ground by mighty movements of the earth, and many cities, citizens and all, have sunk to the bottom of the sea. – Titus Lucretius Carus, De Rerum Natura Sounding Sambatas riffs off of SAMBATAS STAGINGS, an experimental performative project that drew on the imagery of urban ruin to find new ways of using the public space in times of social distancing. LOST ORIGINS by  GABI SCHAFFNER A journey along the subtle outlines of a fragmented map made up of sounds, signals, songs, chimes and rhythms From a Buddhist monastery to bird calls to wandering drones, this piece is all about tracking and breaking the kinship between natural and man-made frequencies. One of our favourite arrangements is to fire-up a rather ancient PC thats sits lurking amongst layers of dust atop an old desk - then simply open 3 instances of VLC, populate each playlist with all wavfiles on the HD and and hit random shuffle mode - very primitive but thats the way we like it!.... so allow us to share with you a somewhat edited version...

Mortal Oscillatory Rates This radiophonic piece is inspired by the work of Royal Raymond Rife  (1888 - 1971). He was a  scientist, engineer and inventor now considered 'The Nikola Tesla of the Medical World'. In 1931 he built the Universal Microscope achieving optical magnifications of over 30,000 times.  It enabled him to observe microorganisms and viruses in a living state. Rife believed that if he could discover the vibrational frequencies at which disease-causing microorganisms vibrated,...

What do invisible sounds fancy? by Philippe Petit « One morning when I woke up I heard a sound that I could not recognize, consequently I wondered about its origin, its existence and its possible correspondences. Our perception of a sound or a music is not the same if we can locate its source, see how it is produced, by what, by whom and therefore I wanted to compose a soundtrack retracing the imaginary of what the sounds we do not hear would do if meeting those which are invisible to us. From Chaos to the Esssential is part of the Ugly/Beauty project which could wear different artistic clothes like a poetry book, a play, some songs, field recordings, etc. Following rivers and tides the piece started near La Loire,...

Ayn Rand’s highly dubious novel ‘The Fountainhead’ has become a source of morbid fascination for us since entering lockdown - forming the basis for a research pathology driven at least in part by an urge to inoculate against certain worlds that could (re)emerge post-Covid. Firmly embedded within the (arguably impoverished) neo-liberal literary canon, ‘The Fountainhead’ is nonetheless something of an embarrassment for many of those who actually live by its values. Even for many of its...

From the Bedroom to the Pond This sound piece is created with sounds recorded on the roads of Belgium, the Alps and Lapland. « Walking is the best way to go slower », says the philosopher Frédéric Gros. We need to find slowness again, to anchor our feet into the ground, to feel its texture, to listen with our toes. At least this is the invitation launched by this sound piece, a geopoetic immersion, an invitation of the paths. Anne Versailles is a Belgian artist, polymorphic, based in...

A Grandmother marvels despite the virus she is able to continue gardening as she has always done and the birds will always keep singing. She listens to the distance sounds now. Isolated voices of people, a child next door. A fly. The garden is a sanctuary, vibrant of living and growing, death is not present. Occasionally she hears planes overhead, she wonders if they bring PPE. A long away siren. A conversation with a passing man, who tells her a women with the same name as her own was buried...

DIVersa_Nula – Thelmo Cristovam (2020) As a sound artist living in Brazil, I bear in mind the idea of broadcasting. Distances spray along different lines and overlapping spatial identities. but there are fixed spaces which identity and segment this vast space yet multiple. The piece is composed of three distinct moments & interests that collapse & run in parallel, the saxophone used as machine, the field recordings (here in the sertão, in particular) & the space/time manipulation...

It has been many months now that we’ve all been asking ourselves : how’s life in the time of viruses? The answers have been constantly changing and probably still will. During the long months of lockdown in Italy, Radio Papesse joined forces with the artists and producers at USMARADIO and became an amplifier for the CROWN project. Like many others, fighting the lockdown through radio. So… what’s happened exactly? For 30 days, every day, artists from all over the world came together for...

Last winter, France experienced the longest strike in its modern history. Launched in opposition to a pension reform project, the strikers’ demands very quickly joined the sectors already struggling in a deleterious socio-economic context: health, justice, university, transport, energy, arts, education and media converged in the streets with the   gilets jaunes  aka yellow vests that had been demonstrating and occupying roundabouts for more than a year. Many alliances were formed: lawyers...

Subespai - "City circles": sound collage on urban canvas Scene. A nondescript hum smothers the echoes of a distant playground. The eeriness intensifies as the afternoon loses the daily battle against the evening soundscape. "Where is this?". The sonic familiarity puts the name of a place on the tip of the tongue right as the movement changes, or does it? The hum left unannounced, that's a fact; now there's something else filling the space, something deeper, more spiritual...

Writes Karen Werner, "To make this radiophonic quilt, programmers at Wave Farm’s radio station WGXC came together for a day to make short radio art pieces about RADIO. We approached this theme in an imaginative, associative and at times literal way: radio as invisible waves, as a metaphor for communication and longing for community, as nostalgic soundscape, as a relationship between senders and receivers, as an amazing little box." Quilt sections in order of presentation: An SOS...

Accelerated by a virus, we have suddenly found ourselves in a possible future. The existen-tial threat appears as if through a magnifying glass, allowing us to perceive the state of the world with increased clarity. With astonishment, we have seen political taboos and unques-tioned assumptions falling by the wayside, allowing our institutions to take action.  All of a sudden, the tried and tested arguments of interest-driven politics – economic constraints, technological barriers, unchanging...

The composers Christine Cornwell and Jago Thornton bounce off on their musical ideas and on what bats might hear while flying inside a room or a chapel. They even muse on the secret afterlife of sound-waves and on the working of their musical brain. Their introspection  – during an interview – are set into a retro-SciFi sound-scape, depicting the creative human brain as a giant nervous clockwork. René Uijlenhoet studied composition with Ton Bruynèl. He works as a composer, performer,...

Listening's Urgency In times of contact restrictions the radio is all the more an instrument to bridge the isolation. What role does listening play in times of crisis? In his project “Listening’s Urgency” the composer and sound artist Hardi Kurda explores this question, searching for the in-between sounds of the medium and the gaps in the social order: Do we overstep the borders of legality by listening? What does illegality mean? Can illegality make noise? Is noise illegal? For the...

Mixing is a collage, that’s how I understand it. Some of raw recordings, some other are made from bits and pieces of elaborate works : films, songs, radio programmes – we’re thieves, and we make something out of our larcenies. Jean-Luc Godard suggested that better then making political films we should make films politically. I try to apply the same idea to radio. I’m Anaïs Denaux, I’m a member of the groups Le Bruitagène and Asu (Association Sonore et Utopique). We make...
